Nach dem feurigen Aufprall eines Meteors wird der rechtschaffene Rentner Max Page von einer außerirdischen Macht überwältigt. Unter dem Einfluss der fremden Lebensform stehend, entwickelt er ein tödliches Verlangen nach menschlichem Blut. Er verlässt das Haus der Familie und begeht eine Reihe von Morden. Sein Weg führt ihn schließlich nach Kalifornien, wo FBI Agent John Mills die Verfolgung aufnimmt. Doch mit jedem Schluck Blut verjüngt sich der außerirdische Vampir und macht so seine Identifizierung fast unmöglich. An der Küste des Pazifiks kommt es zum entscheidenden Kampf.
