Im Film blickt der soeben aus einer Irrenanstalt geflohene de Sade auf sein Leben zurück. Er erinnert sich an seine Jugendzeit, als ihn ein Mädchen auf Geheiß seines Onkels, eines Geistlichen, regelmäßig ausgepeitscht. Er beginnt, seine Züchtigung zu genießen und feiert bald selbst ausschweifende Orgien. Als er aufgrund seines freizügigen Verhaltens ins Gefängnis geworfen wird, verfasst er erste obrigkeitskritische Schriften. Wieder in Freiheit heiratet er, trachtet aber gleichzeitig schon nach der Schwester seiner Ehefrau.
