Les paysans mexicains vivent sous la terreur d'un dictateur impitoyable durant cette année 1880. Les terres sont réquisitionnées par la troupe et toute rébellion est durement réprimée. Le jeune Pancho Villa voit ainsi sont père fouetté à mort sans qu'il puisse intervenir. Des années plus tard, après avoir épousé Rosita, il devient le général des paysans révoltés. Il fait la connaissance de Francisco Madero, qui va devenir président après l'attaque victorieuse de Santa Rosalia par les troupes de Pancho Villa. Pancho fait alors le serment à Madero de lui porter secours s'il venait à être menacé. Mais c'est Pancho qui, le premier, aura besoin de Madero...
