Depuis de nombreuses années, la biologiste comportementaliste allemande Lydia Möcklinghoff étudie cette faune singulière. Ainsi, dans une ferme isolée en pleine nature - la Fazenda Barranco Alto -, elle mène des recherches sur ces vastes marécages. Dans cette mosaïque unique de rivières et de marais qui en fait une zone humide sans égal, les programmes de conservation connaissent un franc succès, grâce à l'investissement et au travail sans relâche de spécialistes, déterminés à préserver ce paradis animalier.
