A néhai megyei szépségkirálynő, Sandra kénytelen elmenekülni erőszakos párja elől. Visszatér szülővárosába, Boulogne-sur-Merbe. 15 év telt el azóta, hogy hátrahagyta édesanyját és ezt a világot, ahol szinte megállt az idő. Pénze nincs, így a megélhetéshez muszáj munkát szereznie. A vidéki kisváros egyetlen lehetősége a helyi halfeldolgozó üzemben mutatkozik, így Sandra kénytelen-kelletlen, de elvállalja azt. Főnöke a munkahelyen intenzív molesztálásba kezd, a nő önmagát védi, a férfi véletlenül meghal. Két kolléganő siet Sandra segítségére, és egy halom pénzt találnak a halott férfi táskájában.
